| The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Program began operation in 1995 at James B. Castle High School. Since that time we have assisted many young men and women in understanding their rights and responsibilities as American Citizens and to realize their leadership potential. We would like to thank the myriad families that have entrusted their sons and daughters to us. We are proud to have played a small part in preparing them for the challenges of the future. These fine young men and women have played a valuable role in our lives as well, and hopefully made us better for it. |
Our MissionThe Marine
Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) program is
The Marine Corps JROTC program is one of the Marine Corps’s contributions to assisting America’s youth to become better citizens. The program produces successful students and productive adults, while fostering in each school a more constructive and disciplined learning environment. This program makes substantial contributions to many communities and ultimately to the nation's future. It is the centerpiece of the Department of Defense’s commitment to America’s Promise for Youth through its emphasis on community service and teen anti-drug efforts.
Course Length: Normally offered four years at a traditional high school (grades 9 - 12). At Castle High School this is a series of one-year academic elective courses which may be taken in any grade 9-12. Course Prerequisites:
Who gains from Marine Corps JROTC? The Cadets and their Parents. Like most young adults, cadets strive to prepare themselves for the future. They often come into the program as shy--sometimes even awkward--boys and girls, and leave as young adults better equipped to meet the future stresses of adult life. Additionally, participation in Marine JROTC can help those high school students who are competing for either a Senior ROTC four-year college scholarship or an appointment to one the US Military Service Academies. Parents like the program because it reinforces the skills of self-discipline, time management and goal setting that they are trying to instill in their kids. The Community. Marine JROTC encourages participation in community programs and projects. It encourages civic responsibility and informed leaders for the future. The MCJROTC Instructors. Marine Corps JROTC Instructors are "retired" Marine Corps Officers or Staff Non-Commissioned Officers. They are hired by the participating school with the approval of Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. Units are staffed with Senior Marine Instructors (SMI) and Marine Instructors (MI). Both are responsible to school officials for the conduct of MCJROTC classes. While on the job, instructors wear the Marine uniform, and meet strict Marine Corps standards for personal appearance. In order to qualify as instructors, candidates must have a good Marine Corps record, strong ethical and moral standards, and a demonstrated potential as teachers. Applicants are required to be in excellent physical health and of sound moral character. More benefits of MCJROTC. While cadets are under no obligation to join the military services, some do enlist. Most take advantage of higher education opportunities such as college, business school, or trade school. Cadets can help their chances of receiving an NROTC scholarship. This scholarship pays full tuition, cost of textbooks, and provides a subsistence allowance of $100 per month for a maximum of 40 months. NROTC scholarships are available at more than 50 collages and universities throughout the country. A successful record in MCJROTC will also reflect favorably on the young man or woman seeking an appointment to any of the United States service academies. Credit may be given for the first-year course of senior ROTC upon approval of the college or university; or, MCJROTC cadets who qualify may enroll in the Platoon Leaders Class officer candidate program. Marine Corps JROTC provides young men and women with an excellent opportunity to build strong and lasting friendships. |
